Okay, so many of you commented and sent in emails,

Heres some ideas sent by Haskins Photography and J. Caraway Photography,

they both suggested PIF with server space.

For example, Jeanelle would take over January, I fwd donations to her too upload and she ftps and emails me back the link to post on the blog. Which is a fantastic Idea until things get back underway with filebuffer.

Thanks so much to you both for these wonderful ideas.

Tell me what you guys think, and if anyone would be interested in taking a month. Theres 12 months out of the year, ha ha ha. I dont blog on weekends.

I will also look into other avenues so we dont miss a beat.

Also please dont stop sending in PIF gifts. If there is a will theres a way, and we will keep on trucking along.

Heres another deal though, We get between 1700-3000 visits a day, not sure if that would be an issue, so lets get more ideas flowing.

No PayPal for Croatia
Many of you have answered my plead for help, and I thank you with all of my heart. Unfortunately I was informed that PayPal does not allow money to be sent to accounts opened in Croatia due to limited service provided here.
I am sorry, I know I keep apologizing but trust me that I’m very sorry for not reading the fine print first, and for believing none of you even considered donating.
Does this mean FileBuffer is doomed? No. I refuse to even consider other advertising options that I successfully resisted for years but that doesn’t mean I’m taking the site down.
I’m paying my bills and paying the overchargers to the point I can afford, when I no longer can FileBuffer will be down, I understand that not having a reliable hosting for your files will certainly drive a lot of people away, but then the traffic will be significantly lower and site will be able to function as normal, c’est la vie.
Call me foolish but I am prepared to have more debit from this than income, and it’s not all because of you, I love FileBuffer, it’s history and work hours invested, saying that alone could be all reliability some users need, and I thank you for that.

So one of our members informed us they tried to paypal and croatia is limited with paypal. Milan is of good people. I think very highly of him. He has been good to PIF for so long and we are thankful.

Dear FileBuffer.org users;
You may have noticed that FileBuffer has been experiencing some difficulties lately. The system is manually shut down for at least 8 hours every day to conserve bandwidth. The adverstments can no longer cover the bandwidth overcharges, and unfortunately I cannot afford any.
I can understand how this may be very frustrating, and I do apologize, but please try to understand that FileBuffer has no (and never have had) other income sources other than two Google’s AdSense ads on the download/error page, that always barely covered the server payments.
I’ve heard people saying “You’ve got traffic, place more ads! Obscure the download button, add some popups!” however that’s never been FileBuffer’s way, I respect site’s public and personally I believe that taking the site down for the time I can’t pay for it to run is more considerate towards you, the user.
FileBuffer will still be worked on and upgraded with new and exciting features in the near future, because after three years I still consider it one of my favorite pet projects, and hopefully I will find a better way to support it for open public use.
If you wish to help make these downtimes shorter or even eliminate the need for any, you can assist me with the bandwidth payments. (Thank you!)

I can understand his avoidance with ads. He wanted this upload site to be ad free.
We all have used it here on PIF and elsewhere. A simple donation would not take much. We have used them for the majority of the time due to numerous complaints saying the other sites had porn and such.

I have numerous things to upload and get on the blog. Until then I am at a standstill, unless someone has an idea of how we can get stuff on this blog that we all worked so hard to do and contribute.

Stephanie: Stephanie Shimerdla, of Obsidian Dawn Brushes.

How long have you been in the photoshop business?

Stephanie: I started out about 4 years ago now, with my artwork. I would find little parts of my paintings that I just wished I had a shape that I could use over and over again to create the desired effect. Looking up that kind of thing, I learned about Photoshop brushes. So I looked up tutorials and started making my own. I found it to be quite enjoyable, obviously, because I've been making them and sharing them with the public for free now for over 2 years. I love making the brushes themselves, but I also love to give them away. I get quite a few emails now telling me that I really should be selling my creations! But there's SO many great free Photoshop brushes out there, and I really do LOVE to give my brushes away so that everyone can use them. There's tons of artists that just don't have the money to purchase brushes. I mean, Photoshop is expensive enough without having to buy other things on top of it, right? Not to mention that I'm a big believer in the "Pay it Forward" ideal. It's my good deed, so to speak, in the digital art community!

What is the best advice (Pay It Forward Style) you could give a photographer starting out in the business?

Stephanie: As far as photography goes, make sure that you have the right camera for you! Nothing too over-sensitive (unless it has a stabilizer type doohickey to keep your photos from blurring when you take too large a breath while snapping a photo!), something that will take large enough photos for references, etc. Take the time to reference it, try it out in the store if you can! As far as Photoshop goes... Tutorials! They are how I learned Photoshop, really (other than the playing around that I did myself). But there's some things you just can't learn by playing around. Check out a tutorial that looks interesting. Follow it through. Almost every single time that I did this, I learned something new about Photoshop. Now, the tutorials on my site are actually designed that way... to help teach people a new aspect of Photoshop with each tutorial, in addition to learning how to do what the tutorial itself explains!

Whats things do you have with you at your desktop while you work?

Stephanie: My camera and the photo references that I take with it, my Wacom Intuos 2 graphics tablet (6 X 8), Photoshop CS2 (CS3 if I'm making them on my Mac notebook), a bunch of iced tea, and a WHOLE list of people's brush suggestions for ideas. What is something you have learned in the past that you carry with you to the present?Stephanie: It's almost impossible to answer this, as far as life goes, anyway. I believe that every single event in our lives molds us into the person that we've become. So, in essence, everything! And I wouldn't change a thing. Because then I may not be who I am today. But as far as making brushes goes... hmm... some things don't make good brushes. I used to try to make brushes out of just about anything and everything. Because I'd seen other people do it, so I figured that it was wanted/needed. In my experience, I've found that hardly anyone uses brushes that aren't made to be able to be transparent. I've written techniques on "filling in" the transparency of brushes, but I'm not sure many people use them. In the end, it's better to make brushes out of things that can look decent transparent, or help add effects to something else.

One thing you just CANT live without?

Stephanie: In life? My computer. I spend waaaaay too much time at my computer. In business? My graphics tablet. I tried doing a lot of this stuff with a mouse for a year or so, then purchased a tablet. Now I couldn't make my brushes without it.

Your favorite quote?

Stephanie: Wow, I have several. I'll list a few. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."-- Dr. Seuss "

Wildest Craziest Thing you have done?

Stephanie: Hmm. Probably going up to meet the man who is now my husband. We had met on an online game, and I totally trusted my gut instinct about the guy (although we'd been friends on said game for many months) and just drove up to meet him. After that, I pretty much dropped everything as soon as I got the chance (I was in college and finished the semester) to move in with him. Wild and crazy at the time (and my mother-in-law would KILL me if I did something like that now... erm, I mean meeting someone that I'd only known online, not moved in with another man - lol!), but totally worth it in the end! I wouldn't change a thing. Wildest and craziest thing that I would LIKE to do? (Yes, I'm adding this part of the question in here!) When the hubby is done with his military commitment, I'd love to just pack everything up and go travel the world. This will, of course, depend upon if we have kids and what ages they are, of course! So it may end up being delayed a few years.

Who is your hero?

Stephanie: My husband. While we have so many things in common, there are some things that he does that I could never hope to do. His writing is good enough to be published. He is a great leader - people really look up to him and admire him, I can see it in their eyes. He's in the military, and is willing to fight for what so many people take for granted... freedom. Being in the military also basically means that the government owns your life, and that's another thing I could never do! He works every day so that I can stay at home and do my artwork, make my brushes, and work on building our financial freedom in various business ventures. I respect him for those things and oh so much more.

What is your favorite technique in photoshop?

Stephanie: It changes, but I'd have to say using paths. I only learned how to use them well fairly recently, and wrote a tutorial on their usage... as well as some of the techniques that I use them for in brushmaking. Of course, paths are really the only "technique" that I use in Photoshop other than making the brushes themselves! Most of the rest is from photos or hand painted.

If you were on a boat, and stranded in the middle of the ocean, what would you do?

Stephanie: I'd look around for a desert island where I could crash and retire on a sunny beach for the rest of my days!

TAKE Action on Cancer Awareness...with MCPActions.com

My Father-In-Law, Bernie, was diagnosed with lymphoma this summer.He had a very rare type of this cancer and it was very far advanced. I shared this action set on a few forums and on my site, called TAKE ACTION ON CANCER AWARENESS. I asked people to pray as they downloaded it.

The treatment was suppose to be a year long of very intense chemo. He
had some kidney problems and has had some heart problems as a result of the chemo. But miraculously is in remission. With this type of cancer (mantle-cell lymphoma), it will come back quickly, unless he does a bone marrow transplant. He is scheduled for this in mid January, and will begin the prep for it this 1st week in January. It will be a few months for recovery from it. And we need prayers and thoughts. They say there is a 40-50% success rate since he will be using his own marrow. Only time will tell if it is successful.

"Well, I first want to say that I am extremely honored to have won this contest! My name is Shelly Hart and I am the mother of 4 daughters. I was completely shocked that I won because I have only been taking photos for about 3 months and did not think I stood a chance! I started out, hoping that I had some potential in photography and then just poured all of my time in to learning all that I could about photography and editing. I decided that I might be on to something and tentatively announced my photography business and things flew from there. Captured With Hart Photography took off sooner than I expected and I can hardly keep up! I don't even have a website so this is an awesome prize!

When I thought about what Christmas meant, I knew exactly what I had in mind. I always reflect on Christmas memories in front of the tree, hoping for Santa when I was little and praying to thank God for the gift of the baby in the manger when I was older. The picture is depicts a grown woman looking back on her past and viewing Christmas through the eyes of the child she once was. Thank you to my oldest daughte and my sister for helping bring this vision to life. I couldn't have done it without you guys!

This contest means so much to me and has been a great way to end 2007. Thanks so much to the payitforward blog for all of the kindness shared. I never thought that after a few short months, I would be able to accomplish things I never dreamed I could. You definitely had a part in that! Can't wait to see what 2008 brings!

I was sitting here Reminiscing, we started the blog back in May for it to be something good, just a feel good blog and vibe here with people paying it forward,contests, giveaways, just all of us doing good deeds, and ending the year with a much planned for Contest that was so special.
We passed the 150,000 visit mark (just noticed that today), and I'm in shock. Checking the stats, and up to 3,000 visits a day. (*faint*)

Again our many thanks to those who PIF on the blog, to the PIF readers who motivate and encourage all of us along.

Thank you to those who sent ideas in for the blog!! Keep em coming, we love your ideas and will continue to strive and implement them on here!

To have patience and just play. You can really learn a lot just by playing :)

How long have you been in business?
Kelly: 2 1/2 years
Mandi: Officially 16 months...and sometimes wish I was still doing it just for fun!..but not often

What is the best advice (Pay It Forward Style) you could give a photographer starting out in the business?
Kelly: Stay true to shooting what you love..... dont change your style for other people. Shoot what you love and the work will come.
Mandi: Pick ONE thing you LOVE to shoot, shoot from your heart, look to your own gut for inspiration and then magazines, books, etc for how to "tweak" that. Sometimes you need to fake it before you make it...but it shouldn't be with your images, it should more be with your confidence. Really decide if you want to do this for a living, cos it isn't just about taking great images, it is about having great people skills, marketing, promotion, running a business and presentation. Set your boundaries before you start, so you aren't pushed when the phone rings, move the boundary line if and when you feel ready, not your clients.

What is something you have learned in the past that you carry with you to the present?
Kelly:somethings are too good to be true... there is no magic action, template, form, seminar etc etc that will make you wake up one day and be great...it is a constant learning process....um
Mandi: People are precious.....sometimes we think we have forever with them, and then we discover that we don't. When I go to capture images, I always keep in mind that I don't know the road this person may travel, and my images could one day be worth more than gold, so I always try and capture the feel of who they are in that moment and do the very best I can for them. Sounds morbid almost! but those of you who have lost loved one's know exactly what I mean!

One thing you just CANT live without?
Kelly: It would have to be computer, i am lost without it. It plays music.... lets me talk to Mands.... get on Beyond... work.......

Mandi: Computer.......it links me to my best friend (Kell!), my family (In-Laws and Beyond Members), learning, fun and Photoshop is on there too! (We've assumed that everyone knows we can't live or do without our Hubby's and kids!...of which we have many....kids I mean, not husbands!)

Kelly: Married my husband the first night I met him (yes we are still married)

Mandi: Fell in love with my husband at first glance, got engaged without a single date, and married three months of hectic planning later. If any of my girls do that, I'll kill them! but 14 years later, I don't regret a minute of it!

Who is your hero?
Kelly: my Meme..... (grandma) she is the center of our family and has kept us all together thru some tough stuff. She was widowed over 15 years ago and became a strong center for us all.

Mandi: Gosh, so many! Photography-wise Audrey Woulard....while her images are out of this world, it is her determination and truth to herself, that I admire most. In everyday life, my husband, who gets up everyday and does the grindstone, so I can live the dream....now that is a SUPER hero!

Kelly: The forum itself was born out of Ava Rosemeyer's tragic passing...... a committee was set up to get the message out there so that this would never happen to another family but there was so much information passing back and forth, we decided to gather all that info into one place……Beyond was born. Everyone on the Committee loved photography and so naturally the talk turned to that, then others began to come in and chat too….within a week, we had 20 members who were all chatting everyday, sharing and critiquing each others work. We were overwhelmed!What started off as our vision and belief that people who loved photography would want somewhere to “hang out” that was fun and pleasant…has become a reality.

Mandi: Beyond was Kelly's vision, and I was fortunate to be asked along for the road. What began as Kell's "what if we"....has grown to be more than either of us ever dreamed. It has been an amazing ride and we have really stuck to the essence of the original vision, which I think is why it has worked...but mostly we have been blessed to have incredible photographer's give of their time and talent to help others .....true PIF style!...which is sometimes a rare quality to find. We've been lucky to find it in Jen Bebb, Jessica Claire, Tony Bridge, Audrey Woulard, Dane Sanders ...and a whole line-up booked until 2009....they give to give back but also cos I think they just plain old love photography as much as we do! Mostly though the forum is really all about the members ...who come from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, UK, France, South Africa, Canada, USA, Germany...and I'm sure I"ve missed a few! It is them that have made it their own and continue to make it work. The Forum really is theirs, we just facilitate it and smooth any bumps.

And drumroll please....................whoever post in comments frist wins a free membership!!! (There is an approval process for this forum, thats the only rule)

Good vs. Evil - The Essentials for a Good Logo Logos are something you should never skimp yourself on when it comes to cost. Pay $50 for a logo, and you will likely "get what you pay for" - a cheap, do-it-yourself looking logo, most likely created in any program NOT intended for graphic design. While a logo may appear to be a small design element compared to larger projects, nothing sets the tone of your company’s branding and identity more than your logo.

So what makes a logo good?

Here are some of the basic elements of a successful logo:

Simple

Good logos are simple. They incorporate just one typeface (two MAX) and/or mark. This simplicity makes a quick statement about your company without unnecessary fluff.

Scalable

Logos should be able to scale down small enough to fit on a business card as well as large enough to fit on a billboard. Be sure your graphic designer gives you vector images of your logo so it will scale without becoming illegible.

Versatile

A logo should look good in both black and white and color. Logos are often used in black and white advertising where color is not available. When color is used, it should look good in both spot color and four color.

Appropriate

Logos should use fonts and colors that appeal to their demographics. A woman’s spa should not use huge clunky lettering and a men’s basketball team wouldn’t use a soft, scripty font. Your audience can often influence your color choices; generally, men prefer blue while women prefer red.

Different

The best way to stand out from your competition is to be different. Don’t emulate a competitor’s logo. Not only can it be illegal, you’ll stand a greater chance of getting noticed if you’re different. While there are many common aspects of logos, there are plenty of ways to make them distinguishable through graphic elements, colors and fonts.

Memorable

The best way to be memorable is to make your logo speak truthfully about your company. It should evoke a feeling or provide insight into what your company does. By doing this it will become recognizable over time. Think Target Stores and Nike and you instinctively see a red bullseye and a swoosh. See? That's what it's all about.

"Hello Here is some information about making templates. I have a few collage templates I could share also. I have really enjoyed your blog. Kelly Haddad's Paper pack has been a lifesaver while doing wedding albums!!

You can create your own template that is easy to change images into and out of. You start by making a new document. Whatever size you like. You can make it a color if you want say blue. Make a new transparent layer and then you marquee however many spaces you want your collage to have. If you marque one space and then fill it with white with the paint can you can duplicate that box so they are the same size by selecting the move tool and holding alt when you drag it over it make a duplicate. You can do a template with 3 4 9 openings. You can also stroke that one transparent layer instead of stoking each box! Now for the coolest part. Take the image you want to put in your collage. Drag it onto the template. You can create a clipping mask by going into your layers pallet and clicking between the image layer and the boxes layer. Hold your mouse over the layers and hold alt you will see when you go in between the two it will change from a hand to a double circle. What that will do will put your image so it looks like it is behind a mat. You can slide it from one box to another. You can use the transform to make it fit. Now to change the colors of the collage to match the person here is another cool thing I learned select a color out of the image. Go to Edit Fill make sure you select preserve transparency. Now you can change the background and brush details to match. Try it and let me know how you make out. It took me a few times to get it.
